When one considers the term “Continent of Science,” one may think of an area filled with the presence of universities or other hubs of science or technology. But, within the geographical and science communities, the title of “Continent of Science” is usually associated with the Antarctica continent, not for the presence of life within the area itself, but rather for the presence of science within the region. The continent of Antarctica is considered to have one of the most extreme climates on Earth, which is the coldest, driest, and windiest. Yet it is for these extreme conditions that the region of Antarctica acts as one of the most notable locations on Earth. From tracking atmospheric changes to searching for clues about our solar system, Antarctica has become one of the most important places on Earth for scientific discovery and research.

Antarctica: The ‘Continent of Science’ and NASA’s real-world science playground

Technically, Antarctica does not have any indigenous permanent residents. The living conditions are so harsh that they don’t let anyone stay there for a long time. Various countries have their study hubs settled there, where everyone lives and works. The researchers keep switching due to difficult living conditions. All these factors make it an ideal natural laboratory for global scientific research, making it the ‘Continent of Science’. The focus of these study hubs includes climatology, astronomy, biology, and glaciology.

How Antarctica helps NASA study space

Antarctica, to NASA, can only mean a training site equivalent to a site in space. It’s considered to be one of the best places in the world to find meteorites. This is because the white ice allows the meteorites to be easily visible in the area, in the frozen ground, and the objects remain preserved, too.Secondly, NASA also utilises Antarctica as a Mars-like environment to test their equipment and robots. This is due to its cold and dry climate that is similar to that of Mars.Researchers also study people who visit Antarctica during extremely long winters with no sun to understand the problem with vitamin deficiency and nutrition to prepare for astronauts in space.

What makes Antarctica a good choice for science

Antarctica’s extreme environment offers a uniquely rich look at both Earth and beyond in our solar system.

  • The presence of ice core samples drilled from the layers of ice indicates the history of the Earth’s past climates.
  • Minimal human intervention also indicates that the ecosystems or the atmospheric conditions are some of the cleanest on the planet.
  • Atmospheric studies enable scientists to observe changes in Earth’s ozone and greenhouse gas levels.
  • Geological research reveals information regarding the former movements of the Earth’s continental plates.

Why Antarctica is not treated like other continents

Antarctica is not governed in the same manner as the other continents. Under the Antarctica Treaty, more than 50 nations have cooperated in peaceful scientific studies in Antarctica. No country claims control over Antarctica, and military activities are prohibited. Countries freely share scientific facilities and discoveries around Antarctica. It is now a focal point of international scientific cooperation
