Bumba da assured me banned industry colleagues can return to work in 72 hours, says Dev
Bengali entertainment industry leaders met to discuss structural changes following Rahul Arunoday Banerjee’s death, moving beyond mourning. Actor-MP Dev pushed for transparent processes, with Prosenjit Chatterjee assuring that those previously banned will soon return to work. The industry, united as a family, demands clarity on Banerjee’s death from the production house, while worker safety and insurance are prioritized.

The industry meeting at Technician’s Studio on Tuesday marked a decisive shift in tone for the Bengali entertainment industry, moving from mourning to introspection and calls for structural change. Held in memory of Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, the closed-door discussion brought together key stakeholders. What emerged most significantly was a growing pushback against the industry’s entrenched culture of informal “bans”. Several members indicated that the practice may now be up for serious review, signalling a possible reset in how professional disputes are handled.

Dev joins the dialogueThe conversation gathered momentum after actor-MP Dev made a pointed intervention, amplifying calls for more transparent and institutional processes within the industry. “We are no longer just an Artists’ Forum or a Federation – we are an industry, a collective under one roof where everyone deserves a place,” Dev said. “Many actors and directors have been sitting idle due to bans. Bumbada (Prosenjit Chatterjee) has assured me that within 72 hours, they will be allowed to return to work.”The assurance, he indicated, came from Prosenjit, who has promised to speak with Federation president Swarup Biswas to facilitate the return of those who have been barred. However, uncertainty remains over how the situation will unfold. There has been noofficial confirmation yet on whether the Federation will respond positively, even as the Artists’ Forum has already convened a meeting to deliberate on the issue.

The entire industry has come together like a family on this… we are all returning to work, says ProsenjitWe will not work with the production house or those associated with it until there is clarity – either in the public domain or through the court – how and under what circumstances Rahul died. We are returning to work across both television and film. We are not at war with anyone, but we have lost a member of our family. The production house must come forward and publicly explain what led to Rahul’s death – something they have not done in the past few days. The entire industry has come together like a family on this.Long-pending worker safety issues have now become urgent. We aim to resolve key concerns, roll out insurance within 30 days, and finalise safety protocols in 15 days in consultation with EIMPA and TV producers – Swarup Biswas
