‘No CM is so egoistic & arrogant’: Kharge's jab at Himanta, says he's confident on Congress alliance win in Assam

Congress National President Kharge addresses press conference

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said the Congress-led opposition alliance is poised to form the next government in Assam, projecting a tally of around 72–73 seats in the 126-member Assembly.Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Kharge launched a sharp attack on chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him the “most corrupt” in the country and urging Mohan Bhagwat to respond to the allegations. “The Congress-led alliance is going to form the next government in Assam. We will win 72-73 seats,” Kharge said.Targeting Sarma further, Kharge alleged widespread corruption under his leadership. “No CM in India is so egoistic and arrogant, like him. Himanta Biswa Sarma is working only for his family’s development. He is running syndicates in everything — tea, school, coal, egg, land, betel nut,” Kharge alleged. He also claimed that members of the Assam cabinet were involved in corruption and possessed vast assets.Calling for accountability, Kharge said, “I seek comments from Mohan Bhagwat on the corruption charges against the Assam CM. I request Prime Minister and Home Minister to give their reactions.”On allegations made by Congress leader Pawan Khera regarding Sarma’s wife allegedly holding multiple foreign passports and overseas assets, Kharge said investigative agencies should examine the matter. “They have already filed an FIR against Khera. Let them probe the matter. We will face the case as it progresses,” he added.Kharge also took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting he “has no right” to criticise Rahul Gandhi or the Gandhi family, citing their sacrifices for the country.Responding to allegations that Congress engages in minority appeasement, Kharge said, “Those who have less brain call Congress pro-Muslim and pro-Pakistan.”
