TN RTE admission 2026: Parents in Tamil Nadu looking to secure Class LKG and I admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the 2026–27 academic year can start planning, as key dates approach. Applications will open on April 20 and close on May 18, giving families nearly a month to submit forms either online at the official TN RTE portal or directly at their chosen private school.Verification of documents and age criteria will also be strictly checked this year. The children applying for LKG should have been born between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023, and those applying for Class I should have been born between August 1, 2019, and July 31, 2020. Applicants from the EWS category should prove that their family income per annum is not more than Rs 2 lakh.TN RTE 2026–27 dates and deadlines:

How to apply and necessary documentsParents should provide evidence about the child’s date of birth, address, caste/category, and income proof. The portal will also seek documents for children belonging to specific categories like orphans, children with disabilities, sanitation workers, or children with HIV. Documents will have to be provided between April 22 and May 19 when the process is being verified online. If there are any missing documents, parents will receive an SMS notification and must upload the same before 5 pm on May 19.The draw of lots will be done in schools on May 22, and the final list of admissions will be declared on May 29. Children of special categories are given preference before the draw of lots. Parents are urged to consider their priorities while applying since no alterations can be made after applying.Here is an exhaustive list of documents that will be required for TN RTE admission 2026–27.Required documents for all applicants• Age proof – Birth certificate obtained from the Gram Panchayat, Municipal Corporation, hospital registration, or from Anganwadi/Balwadi.• Address proof – In case of Aadhaar card, Passport, electricity bill, water bill, or Voter ID proof in the applicant’s father/mother’s name. Rent agreement, if others are not available.• Caste category proof – Obtained from the appropriate authority for reserved categories.• Income proof – Income proof for the financial weaker section (EWS), having a maximum annual income of Rs 2 lakhs. The document must be issued by a competent authority.• Special categories’ documents• Orphans – Certificate from the District Child Welfare Committee (DCWC)• Children with HIV – Medical certificate from an appropriate authority.• Children with transparents – Certificate issued by a competent authority.• Children of sanitation workers – Certificate issued by municipal authorities.• Children with disabilities – Civil surgeon or medical authority certified.• Photo – Colour photograph in passport size of the child.• Acknowledgement Receipt – Issued from school/portal after submitting the form.• Bank statement – If there is a bank account for the child/guardian, copy of the bank passbook.• Self Declaration – Required if no PAN card/income tax return is there, stating the income is non-taxable.The parents need to make sure that all the documents submitted are clear and readable within the specified application period (20th April – 18th May).Seat calculation and official directivesPrivate matriculation schools have been instructed to calculate the total number of seats available under RTE for LKG and Class I and submit the data to district chief education officers by April 7. The seat distribution, based on the state’s Education Management Information System (EMIS) records for 2025–26, will be displayed on school notice boards on April 7 and made publicly available on the TN RTE portal on April 15.This year, the process has returned to inviting fresh applications, after last year schools were asked to transfer eligible students to the RTE quota without a formal call for applications. Parents are encouraged to start preparing documents early to ensure a smooth application experience.
