Kolkata: West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has found a surgeon prima facie guilty of medical negligence that led to the death of a 42-year-old man. The council directed Sarfaraz Jajil Baig to reply to the charges within three weeks of receiving a copy. The case dates to Feb 2, 2024, when Camac Street resident Aman Chopra was taken to Belle Vue Clinic with acute abdominal pain. Tests revealed appendicitis but family alleged the surgery was delayed by two days. “Baig told me the surgery was minor, but it took two and a half hours,” said Chopra’s wife Simran.Chopra’s condition deteriorated and he was shifted to the ICU at night. He was put on ventilation and Simran was asked to come back to the hospital as he had lost two litres of blood. Chopra had a second surgery. “With no sign of improvement, I flew him to a Hyderabad hospital where doctors said one of his intestines got punctured during the surgery in Kolkata,” Simran said. Chopra died in Hyderabad. “You have been found prima facie guilty of infamous conduct in a profession,” the WBMC letter to Baig read.“I am yet to get a copy of this order,” Baig told TOI.
