Canada’s underwater volcano reveals over a million giant ravioli eggs in shocking deep-sea discovery

More than a million large, leathery egg capsules have been found resting on the summit of an underwater volcano off Canada’s Pacific coast. The discovery comes from surveys carried out at the Tuzo Wilson Seamount Complex, where warm water rises through fractured rock beneath the seafloor. These egg cases belong to the Pacific white skate, a deep-sea species that lives thousands of feet below the surface and is rarely observed in its natural environment. The sheer number of eggs, combined with their location in a geothermally active zone, has drawn attention from marine researchers. The volcano is not just a geological feature but also a functioning nursery, supporting early life stages in a setting shaped by heat, depth, and isolation.

Pacific white skate eggs found scattered across an underwater volcano

The egg capsules were found spread across the summit rather than concentrated in a single pocket of heat. Researchers observed that the skates return repeatedly to this area to lay their eggs. This suggests the site is used over time, not just during a single breeding event.Warm water seeps upward through cracks in the volcanic rock. It does not boil or create extreme conditions. Instead, it maintains a steady, slightly warmer environment across a wide area. That subtle warmth appears to be enough to influence where the skates choose to reproduce. The species responsible for these eggs is known as the Pacific white skate, or Bathyraja spinosissima. It lives at depths ranging from roughly 2,600 to 9,600 feet. At those depths, sunlight does not reach, and temperatures remain close to freezing as reported by Earth.com.Adult skates can grow to around 6.5 feet in length, though sightings are rare. Their biology is not fully understood because of how inaccessible their habitat is. This makes direct observations of reproduction especially valuable for scientists studying the species. The presence of a large nursery in one place offers a rare opportunity. It allows researchers to study development, behaviour, and habitat use without relying only on scattered encounters.

Pacific white skate egg cases: Size, structure, and development in deep-sea conditions

Each egg case measures around 20 inches across. The shape is flattened and slightly curved, which has led to comparisons with oversized ravioli. Inside each case, a developing embryo is supported by a large yolk supply. This yolk provides all the energy needed for growth over several years. Development in deep-sea conditions is slow, reportedly taking up to four years before hatching. That long timeline reflects the cold and stable environment in which the embryos develop.Producing such large eggs requires significant energy from the mother. It appears to be a trade-off, fewer offspring but with a higher chance of survival if conditions remain stable.

Underwater volcano influences Pacific white skate development

The geothermal activity at the seamount seems to play a role in how quickly the embryos develop. Warmer water surrounding the egg cases may reduce the time needed for gestation, even if only slightly.Researchers suggest that a small increase in temperature can have a noticeable effect at these depths. If embryos develop faster, they spend less time in a vulnerable stage. That could improve survival rates once they hatch and begin moving into deeper waters.Single-sentence observation. The temperature difference is subtle but important.

Pacific white skate breeding behaviour

Similar behaviour was reported in 2018 near hydrothermal vents, where Pacific white skate eggs were found close to naturally heated areas of the seafloor. Genetic analysis linked those eggs to the same species, confirming their identity. The newly documented nursery in Canada appears far larger than those earlier observations. It suggests that using geothermal warmth for reproduction may be more widespread than previously thought.
