Commercial taxes department collects record Rs43,324cr in 2025-26
In an impressive financial feat, Bihar’s commercial taxes department has recorded an unprecedented tax collection of Rs 43,324 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26, marking a commendable 4.09% rise compared to last year. This surge, particularly in GST revenue, highlights Bihar’s economical prowess, outstripping the national growth average.

Patna: State commercial taxes minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said on Thursday that the department has made a record collection of taxes worth Rs 43,324 crore during 2025-26, which is 4.09% more than the collection made in the 2024-25 fiscal. Moreover, tax earnings under the goods and services tax (GST) have increased substantially, while the registration department’s revenue collection was 101% of the target, he said.Yadav, who was accompanied by the department’s secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, said the record tax collections made in the 2025-26 fiscal represent an “outstanding performance” by the commercial taxes department. The taxes collected include GST, value added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, and other taxes.“The commercial taxes department has made a record collection of taxes worth Rs 43,324 crore in 2025-26. The department had collected Rs 41,623 crore in 2024-25,” Yadav said, adding that the overall increase is Rs 1,700 crore compared with the previous fiscal, reflecting a growth of 4.09%.In line with this trend, he said the tax collected under GST has been Rs 32,801 crore, which is 11.7% more than the amount collected in 2024-25. Later, as he explained, the central govt deducted Rs 724 crore to make up for the shortfall recorded in the integrated GST (IGST) balance. This reduced the state’s GST collection to Rs 32,077 crore from the earlier figure of Rs 32,801 crore.“Despite this reduction, the state has shown a growth of 9.20% in GST collection, while the national GST growth is 6%,” Yadav said, adding that Bihar’s ranking in GST collection is fourth in the country.Noting that the tax collections for 2025-26 are provisional figures, he said the amount could increase further once the detailed figures of professional tax are finalised, as they are usually received later. He also said the department’s achievement in registering high gross collection has come despite a reduction in GST slabs on many consumer items in September last year. “Yet, Bihar’s growth at 10.60% over the 2024-25 fiscal is next only to that of Karnataka,” Yadav said, adding that the department collects four categories of taxes — BST, VAT on petrol and diesel, electricity duty, and professional tax.The department has collected Rs 11,247 crore in non-GST collections. This includes Rs 10,037 crore as VAT on petrol, Rs 983 crore from electricity duty, and Rs 226 crore as professional tax. Meanwhile, the registration department achieved revenue collection of 101% of the target, exceeding the collection made in 2024-25 by 9.8%.
