Oracle began its largest-ever round of layoffs on Tuesday, cutting thousands of employees worldwide with no advance notice. The termination emails—signed “Oracle Leadership”—landed at 3AM Pacific and 6AM EST, informing staff their roles had been eliminated as part of a “broader organisational change” and that the day they were reading the email was their last working day. TD Cowen estimates the final tally could reach 20,000 to 30,000 employees—roughly 18% of Oracle’s 162,000-strong global workforce—which the bank projects would free up $8–10 billion in cash flow.
Sign the papers first—severance comes after DocuSign
There’s a catch to the payout: employees must sign their termination documents via DocuSign before any severance is processed. US employees are being offered four weeks of base pay for their first year, plus one additional week per year of service, capped at 26 weeks. In India, the formula follows the standard N+2 structure, though unvested RSUs are forfeited entirely. The package is notably leaner than recent peers—Block offered 20 weeks plus extras, Meta’s 2025 round included 16 weeks with six months of healthcare. Oracle’s offer includes neither health continuation nor additional perks.The cuts are widely tied to Oracle’s aggressive—and expensive—AI data centre expansion. The company has taken on $58 billion in new debt in two months, its stock has dropped over 25% this year, and several US banks have reportedly pulled back from financing its infrastructure projects. Oracle declined to comment.
