Guwahati: Heavy rainfall on Tuesday night once again exposed the city’s vulnerability to waterlogging, with several key areas going under water and bringing traffic movement to a near standstill.Commuters faced great difficulty walking on the inundated road, particularly in low-lying pockets where drainage systems failed to cope with sudden downpour.Areas such as Beltola wireless, Hatigaon, Rukminigaon, Basisthapur, Anil Nagar reported severe waterlogging. Residents said even a few hours of intense rain was enough to flood the streets. Many office-goers and daily commuters faced delays, while some were forced to abandon their routes which connected to the main road.“It is difficult for me to go to my college, as our lane gets flooded. It takes several hours for the water to flush out. Sometimes I get late for my classes or there are days when I miss out,” said Tanmoy Kalita, a college student who resides in Anil Nagar. For commuters travelling from the Cycle Factory area to Lal Ganesh, the road is riddled with potholes, and a layer of sludge has made movement difficult. The situation further aggravated in the Kharguli area, where a landslide occurred, close to the governor’s office. Locals alleged that they had a hint about this incident and they had informed the Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s (GMC) divisional engineer about it, but there was no response. No casualty was reported.GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania came to the scene to take stock of the situation. “With heavy rains lashing the city in recent days, while the plains are facing severe waterlogging, people living in hilly areas are equally affected as they encounter landslides. We urge residents to remain cautious, as such incidents are likely to recur, especially where hills have been cut,” he said.According to the latest forecast issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, the city recorded 20.3mm of rain in the past 24 hours, indicating continued pre-monsoon activity in the region. The report added that the total rainfall for the previous month stood at 135.6mm, reflecting a significant accumulation over March.
