DoE directs teachers to engage students, assess learning gaps as schools reopen in Delhi

Delhi Directorate of Education has instructed teachers to hold interactive introductory sessions, help students share their aspirations, and assess learning gaps as schools across the city opened for the 2026-27 academic session on Wednesday. According to a DoE circular issued on Tuesday, the focus in the opening days will be on creating an inclusive and engaging classroom environment to help both returning and newly admitted students adjust to new classes and peer groups. Teachers have been asked to interact with parents and guardians to understand their expectations and update student records, it stated and added that they will also present an overview of the syllabus, outlining learning objectives and academic expectations for the year. To ensure steady progress, teachers have been advised to assess subject-specific gaps and design targeted interventions, while also organising activities that promote peer interaction, communication skills and confidence among students, it said. According to the circular, heads of schools have been directed to complete preparatory arrangements, including finalising timetables, maintaining hygiene, ensuring the availability of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. The guidelines also stressed the timely distribution of textbooks, proper signage across school premises, and deployment of staff at entry and exit points to guide students in an orderly manner. Authorities have asked schools to plan the academic calendar in advance, review the previous session’s results, and focus on improving foundational literacy and numeracy, along with co-curricular and sports activities, it added. Officials at the district and zonal levels have been instructed to visit schools regularly, including on the opening day, to monitor preparedness and ensure compliance with the directions, it stated and added that the measures are aimed at ensuring a smooth, structured and welcoming start to the new academic session.
