'Avengers: Doomsday' to skip clash with 'Dune: Part Three'; film to advance release to December 11 to score IMAX screens: Reports

As fans were gearing up for the epic ‘Dunesday’ clash with Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ locking horns with ‘Dune: Part Three’, new reports claim that the big box office showdown may be averted afterall.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to advance relaese date?

According to various news reports, Marvel is reportedly considering advancing the release date of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, not to avoid a clash, but to secure access to premium IMAX screens during a highly packed December box office.Reports state that the studio is in discussions to move the film’s release forward to December 11, a week earlier than its current December 18 schedule. The move comes after ‘Dune: Part Three’ has refused to budge after locking in its IMAX release as early as June 2024. As ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ booked the same day a year later, the film will not have any access to screen its film in IMAX format.

‘Dune: Part Three’ books IMAX screens for 3 weeks

‘Dune: Part Three’, which was also shot in IMAX, has reportedly committed all US screens for three weeks starting December 18. With this deal in place, ‘Doomsday’ will likely not have access to a significant number of screens for nearly a month.

Why December 11 is perfect for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

After ‘Jumanji 3’ vacated its December 11 release for a December 25 release, the box office window is now open for ‘Doomsday’ to score not only IMAX screens, but to also enjoy a solo release and rake in the big bucks before if faces any comeptition. Desipte the clash, it must be noted that ‘Doomsday’ is tracking a USD 1 billion box office collection.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ box office record

In 2019, with the release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the IMAX format contributed significantly, generating USD 91.5 million during its opening weekend. A one week solo run was enough for ‘Endgame’ to become the fastest movie in history to hit USD 1 billion at the global box office. It achieved the milestone in just five days and went on to earn a USD 2.79 billion lifetime collection.Meanwhile, the Bollywood movie ‘King’ starring Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan is also slated for a December release. The film is currently set to hit the big screens on December 25.
