Gina Gershon reveals why she turned down ‘Friday the 13th’ Role: ‘It felt like exploitation 101’

Show business is full of those “what if” stories. Gina Gershon’s story is one of the more surprising ones. Early in her career, she got the chance to star in one of the most famous horror franchises ever, ‘Friday the 13th’. For a young actor, turning down something that big isn’t easy. But Gina did it. Before she was known for daring, edgy roles, she walked away from what could’ve been her big break. Now, years later, she’s talking about why she passed, and her reason is sparking a whole new conversation about exploitation and how women were treated in old-school slasher films.

Gina Gershon’s take on the ‘exploitive’ script

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, in a 2026 interview promoting her memoir, Gershon shared that she was offered a lead in ‘Friday the 13th Part 2’. She was excited, like any newcomer would be. But then she found out more about the role, especially the death scene. Turns out, her character was supposed to die topless, just before getting killed. Gershon said that the detail felt unnecessary and made her uncomfortable. She told Fox News Digital, “I was offered a lead in that movie. And, of course, I was so excited to act in movies, but it definitely felt kind of exploitative to me and a little silly that right before she gets killed, her top has to come off.”In her book, she goes deeper. “At the time, those kinds of slasher movies always had girls dying with their breasts exposed,” she wrote. “My character would be killed by a stake through the heart, blood dripping down her t—. That seemed pretty lame to me: exploitation 101.”Per Gershon, it was early days in her career, and this could’ve been her first big-screen role. She didn’t avoid nudity altogether, as she’d later do plenty in films. However, Gershon explained how this particular scene just didn’t sit right. So she asked her dad for his opinion.Gershon said, “I was really lucky that I had a father who really taught me how to believe in my own decisions. It wasn’t like I had to rebel against my family. I remember asking him about it, thinking he was going to say, ‘No daughter of mine is going to do that!’ And he said, ‘It’s your body. If you’re comfortable with it, I’m comfortable with it.’”In the end, her gut made the call. “When I sat and thought about it, I just thought, ‘I don’t really want to do this. I wasn’t comfortable with it. It seemed silly to me,’” she said. “Not that I had anything against nudity—I grew up on European films—but only if it makes sense for the character and the story. But when it just seems silly, I don’t know. It just felt like it was something that wasn’t for me.”Gershon made her screen debut that same year in ‘Beatlemania: The Movie’, playing a dancer. She kept working, picking up small roles, like in ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, and eventually landed in ‘Pretty in Pink’, ‘Cocktail’, and ‘Jungle Fever’. Her breakout came with ‘Showgirls’, where she played Cristal Connors. That film had plenty of nudity and even tougher scenes, but it was different as Gershon felt it made sense for the story.

‘Friday the 13th’: What is it?

The franchise kicked off in 1980 and quickly became a legend in slasher movie history. The first film follows teens at Camp Crystal Lake, picked off one by one. Later on, the infamous Jason Voorhees shows up and becomes a horror icon. These movies are famous for their formula: remote locations, young victims, and creative, often graphic deaths. By Part 2, the series was already known for its shock value.
