This festival is celebrated on Trayodashi tithi of shukla paksha in the month of Chaitra.

Lord Mahavira was born on Trayodashi Tithi (13th day of rising moon) of shukla paksha in the month of Chaitra Mahavir Jayanti is going to be celebrated on March 31, 2026. According to the Gregorian calendar, this day is observed in March and April.

Mahavir Jayanti 2026: Significance

Mahavir Jayanti holds a great religious significance among Jains. Lord Mahavir was born as Vardhaman, which means the one who grows in prosperous. He was born to king Sidhhartha and queen Trishala in Kundagram (Bhar, India in 599 BC). At an early age, he shown compassion, knowledge, and a distaste in worldly pleasures despite coming from a regal family. He left his royal family just to achieve Kevala Jnana after 12 years of intense penance and meditation, the supreme knowledge and he later he became a spiritual leader. This profound realization led him to develop the core principles of Jainism: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness).

Mahavir Jayanti 2026: His Teachings

  • Ahimsa (Non-violence): To cause no harm to any living being, in thought, word, or action.
  • Satya (Truth): To always speak the truth and avoid falsehoods.
  • Asteya (Non-stealing): To never take anything that is not willingly offered.
  • Brahmacharya (Chastity/Celibacy): To exercise control over senses and desires.
  • Aparigraha (Non-attachment): To detach oneself from material possessions and worldly desires.

These are the above mentioned teachings given by Lord Mahavira that people should learn.
