Tripura has cleared a major expansion of its early childhood education network, approving the introduction of pre-primary units in 450 government schools from the 2026–27 academic session. The decision marks a sharp escalation in the state’s efforts to bring foundational learning into the formal school system. The latest move will raise the total number of pre-primary facilities in government-run schools to 695. The scale of growth is striking when viewed against the baseline, Tripura had only nine such institutions until 2018. Since then, 236 units were added, but the new rollout significantly accelerates that trajectory. With nearly 4,800 schools across the state, officials expect the expansion to deepen access to early education, especially in remote and underserved areas.Schools have also been asked to prepare for nursery admissions from the upcoming academic session, with coordination required across administrators, teachers, school management committees, parents, and local bodies according to media reports.

NEP framework driving the shift

The expansion is anchored in the National Education Policy (NEP), which places early childhood care and education at the centre of long-term learning outcomes. Officials indicated that the move is designed not only to strengthen foundational skills but also to address enrollment gaps in government schools.Bringing children into the schooling system at an earlier stage is expected to improve retention and create a more stable academic progression.

Monitoring mechanism put in place

Administrative accountability has been built into the plan. DEOs have been tasked with providing full support to identified schools and submitting regular progress reports on implementation. The education department has also instructed schools to report any operational issues promptly to district authorities, signalling a tighter monitoring structure to prevent delays.

Recasting the foundation of school education

Tripura’s move is also an indicator of a structural shift in the approach that is being taken with regards to early educational learning in relation to the broader schooling system. Pre-primary learning is being mainstreamed at scale. The success of this rollout will depend on how it is executed, but what is clear is that there is an intention to reshape the entry point of schooling in the state.
