Dibrugarh: Majuli district administration has officially unveiled “Deoraj,” a mascot based on the migratory greylag goose, to spearhead its voter awareness campaign for the upcoming elections. The mascot was launched during a ceremony held at the Integrated DC’s Office under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme on Saturday. The initiative aims to draw a parallel between the migratory birds’ commitment to the riverine island district and the citizens’ responsibility toward the electoral process.Every winter, thousands of greylag geese traverse thousands of miles to reach the heart of Majuli. Their arrival not only enriches the island’s biodiversity through breeding, but also symbolises a deep-rooted connection with the land. By choosing “Deoraj” as the mascot, the administration hopes to inspire a similar sense of belonging and duty among the local electorate.Majuli district commissioner cum district election officer, Srishti Singh, said just as these birds return to Majuli’s protective embrace every year, voters must flock to the polling stations to exercise their sacred democratic rights.“The arrival of the greylag goose is a testament to Majuli’s welcoming nature. We want every voter to feel that same pull toward their polling stations. Deoraj represents the spirit of participation,” she said.To engage younger voters and the tech-savvy populace, an attractive selfie point, centered on election awareness, was inaugurated on the occasion.
