The New York Yankees made another quick roster move, and this one has people talking. Just days after sending Jasson Dominguez to the minors, the team traded infielder Zack Short to the Washington Nationals. What surprised fans even more was the return, only cash. The Yankees shared the update themselves. “The New York Yankees today announced that they have traded INF Zack Short to the Washington Nationals in exchange for cash considerations,” the team posted on X. This move came out of nowhere for many. Zack Short had only joined the Yankees on a minor league deal in December. He was not on the 40-man roster, but he had a strong spring. In 25 plate appearances, he hit .278 with a .480 on-base percentage. He also showed flexibility, playing second base, shortstop, and third base.So naturally, fans expected him to at least stay as depth. Instead, the Yankees decided to move on. The Nationals quickly placed him with their Triple-A team in Rochester, showing they see some value in him.

Yankees trade Zack Short for cash as Hal Steinbrenner faces fan backlash over payroll and luxury tax concerns

This is not the first deal between these two teams this week. Earlier, the Yankees traded Jorbit Vivas to the Nationals and got pitcher Sean Paul Linan in return. That deal felt balanced. Linan is 21 years old and had a strong 2025 season, with a 3.03 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 77.1 innings.Letting Zack Short go just for cash has raised questions, especially because of what Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said not long ago. He openly talked about wanting to reduce payroll.“Would it be ideal if I went down [with the payroll]? Of course,” Steinbrenner said earlier. He also shared that even though Forbes reported around $700 million in revenue for 2025, the team still ended up losing money.Right now, the Yankees’ luxury tax payroll for 2026 is expected to be around $325 million. Steinbrenner has already called that number “unsustainable.”Because of that, fans are now connecting the dots. Many believe this trade is less about baseball and more about saving money. And that has led to strong reactions online. One fan wrote, “The billionaire needs money?” Another added, “Cash considerations, music to Hal’s ears.”Some fans even joked about future moves. “Now trade Anthony Volpe for cash considerations,” one comment read.At the same time, others pointed out something else. Anthony Volpe struggled last season, hitting .212 and leading the league with 19 defensive errors, yet he remains on the roster. That makes this move look even more confusing. For the front office, this might be about trimming extra players before final roster decisions. But for fans, it feels like a different story, one where money is becoming more important than depth.
