John Smart, a former Olympic freestyle skier, has shared the devastating news that his son, Kai Smart, has died at just 23 years old. The young filmmaker was caught in an avalanche in Japan and suffered severe injuries that left him in a coma. Despite efforts to save him, doctors later confirmed there was no chance of recovery. The family managed to fly Kai back to Vancouver, where he was treated at Vancouver General Hospital. But the damage caused by lack of oxygen during the avalanche was too severe. In a deeply emotional statement shared with the public, John Smart, along with his wife Julia Snell and their older son Luke Smart, spoke about the pain they are going through.“It is with immense sadness that we have to let you know that our kind, brave and beautiful son and brother Kai is no longer with us,” the family wrote. They added, “We are beyond heartbroken and there are no words to describe the pain we are feeling losing him so young.”The statement also thanked people who reached out with support, showing how much Kai was loved by those around him.

As the family shared more about Kai Smart’s life, they painted a picture of someone full of energy and passion. He had recently graduated from the University of British Columbia and was already working on a documentary project. At the time of the accident, he was filming a team trying to climb the Tien Shan mountains in Kazakhstan.John Smart described his son as someone who loved adventure and learning. “Kai was a warrior, a mountain man, an explorer of the world,” the family wrote. He was always curious and eager to experience more.In a moment that brought some comfort during this loss, the family revealed that Kai’s organs were donated. “We are so glad to be able to tell you that Kai’s heart is still beating in someone else and he is keeping 4 other people alive with his organs,” they shared.Instead of holding a traditional funeral, the family plans to celebrate his life in a special way. They said they will organize a “celebration of life” in Whistler and invite those who knew Kai to come together, share stories, and remember him.The message ended with a simple but powerful line: “Kai truly lit up the world wherever he went and will be deeply missed.”
