As tech leaders are warning about mass unemployment due to AI, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas is now offering a more optimistic view. According to a report by Fortune, speaking on the AII-In podcast recoded at the recent Nvidia GTC event, Srinivas argued that AI-driven layoffs should not be feared, but embraces as an opportunity for people to pursue entrepreneurship. “The reality is most people don’t enjoy their jobs,” Srinivas said. “There’s suddenly a new possibility, a new opportunity, to go use these tools, learn them, and start your own mini business…Even if there is temporary job displacement to deal with, that sort of glorious future is what we should look forward to.”

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas believe AI is the startup engine

Srinivas believes that AI will make small businesses more nimble, reducing the need for large teams and heavy funding. He also pointed put examples like TurboAI, an AI-powered flashcard and quiz tool launched by two college students with less than $300. The startup now has 8.5 billion users and generates $1 million a month with just 13 employees—work that would have required hundreds of staff without AI.Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also predicted that AI could enable the first billion-dollar business run by a single person. Srinivas echoed that vision, saying the best chance for such a “one-person unicorn” lies in small businesses optimized with AI.

Increasing concerns over AI job losses

The comments made by Srinivas come amid the increasing anxiety about AI’s impact on employment. Recently, ServiceNow CEO Bill McDermott also predicted that unemployment could exceed 30% in the coming years. Meanwhile, Block CEO Jack Dorsey cut 40% of his staff last month, citing AI’s ability to reshape how companies operate. According to the Alliance for Secure AI, more than 101,000 AI-linked job losses have already occurred in the US since February 2025.However, not everyone agrees with the dire forecast of unemployment. As per the report by Fortune, Oxford Economics believe that companies mat be exaggerating the role of AI in workforce reduction, calling it ‘AI washing’. Venture capitalist Bill Gurley also downplayed apocalyptic predictions, saying the AI boom resembles past waves of technological disruption where the labor market eventually adapts. While AI layoffs are already reshaping industries, Srinivas insists they could ultimately free people from jobs they dislike and open doors to innovation. “America has always been about entrepreneurship,” he said. “AI is going to help us rediscover that spirit.”
