Ranbir Kapoor follows in great-grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor’s footsteps with Lord Ram role in 'Ramayana'; fans find 90-year-old PICS

Indian film fans are in for a treat this year, with the long lineup of big-ticket films. After ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ fans are eagerly awaiting the Yash-starrer ‘Toxic’. Helping fans brighten up the festive season of Diwali, Ranbir Kapoor will take over the big screens with his turn as Lord Ram in director Nitesh Tiwari‘s ‘Ramayana’. With buzz about the mythological epic only growing by the day fans were pleasantly surprised to learn that RK will play the role of Lord Ram on screen, over 92 years after his great-grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor famously essayed the same role in the 1934 film ‘Seeta’.

Fans find Prithviraj Kapoor’s 90-year-old pics as Lord Ram

The casting marks a full-circle moment of sorts in Bollywood film history, with two generations of the Kapoor family bringing the revered character to life on the big screen.

Prithviraj Kapoor’s turn as Ram in ‘Seeta’

Prithviraj Kapoor was among the early few actors who played the role of Lord Ram, thus bringing the mythological genre to screen. In the 1934 film, Prithviraj played the role of Lord Ram, opposite Durga Khote who played the role of Seeta in the Debaki Kumar Bose directorial.

About the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘Ramayana’

Nearly a century later, his great-grandson, Ranbir will pick up the bow and arrow as he brings forth a modern cinematic retelling of the epic in a large-scale production. Ranbir will feature as Lord Ram opposite an ensemble cast including Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yas as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, among many others.

‘Ramayana’ release date

The epic saga will hit the big screens in two parts. While Part 1 is slated for a Diwali 2026 release, ‘Ramayana: Part 2’ is slated to hit the big screen on Diwali 2027.
