'I ended up overextending myself': Dave Grohl goes candid on scandal, loss, and therapy amid Foo Fighters' return
Dave Grohl, the dynamic frontman of the Foo Fighters, has candidly shared his struggle with personal tragedies, notably the loss of his bandmate Taylor Hawkins and his mother. He immersed himself in 70 weeks of intensive therapy, coming to terms with his ‘overly ambitious’ nature in a quest to ‘find my heart.

Foo Fighters’ frontman Dave Grohl experienced a disrupted period in his life following his confession that he fathered a daughter outside of his marriage to Jordyn Blum. Now, in his first major interview since the bombshell confession he made in September 2024, the 57-year-old has opened up about the personal turmoil, grief, and a long road to self-reflection.

Dave Grohl reveals he spent 70 weeks in therapy

During an interaction with The Guardian, Grohl revealed spent the past 70 weeks in intensive therapy, clocking more than 430 sessions. “I did the math the other day: over 430 sessions,” he said. “I’ve been in therapy six days a week,” he said. For Grohl, the process wasn’t triggered by one single event but by an accumulation of personal and professional upheavals, and the past few years have been particularly devastating. In 2022, Taylor Hawkins, Grohl’s bandmate and close friend, passed away. The demise of Hawkins was followed just months later by the death of Grohl’s mother, Virginia.Grohl admitted that the grief was almost too overwhelming to process.

Dave Grohl feels he needs to get things off his heart

One of the things he’s discovered since beginning therapy is his tendency to be “overly ambitious” and take on too many projects.“I think that’s how I ended up overextending myself and getting lost,” he said, before adding, “I wasn’t sitting with myself and really letting [feelings] go from my head into my heart. Getting to the point where I was just like, I need to stop, turn everything off, and find my heart.”

A reset for Foo Fighters?

Amid all the chaos and turmoil, Foo Fighters are experimenting with new music. Their upcoming album ‘Your Favorite Toy’ marks a stark departure from their polished recent records. The project also reflects his internal struggles. Grohl also revealed that the songs explore themes of guilt, survival, and the search for meaning.
