Google is finally building a Gemini app for Mac, and it’s already in people’s hands. Bloomberg reports that the company has begun privately sharing an early build with select users outside Google—the first real proof that a dedicated desktop app exists and is far enough along to test in the wild.The test version is limited by design. Google told participants it would include “only critical features from the other clients but not all,” which implies a more complete build is being held back. App researcher M1Astra, who tipped off Bloomberg, says the project carries the internal code name Janus. What’s shipping to testers right now looks a lot like Gemini on iPhone and iPad—same layout, scaled up.
There’s one feature that goes beyond the mobile app
Buried in the app’s code is something called Desktop Intelligence—and it’s the most Mac-specific thing here. Enable it, and Gemini can see your screen and read directly from open apps to pull in context. Google describes it as letting the AI “see what you see (such as screen context) and pull content directly from these apps to improve and personalize your experience only when Gemini is in use.”In practice, that means Gemini could reference your calendar, an open document, or anything else on screen without you lifting a finger. Claude’s Cowork feature and the ChatGPT Mac app already work this way. Gemini on desktop, until now, hasn’t.

ChatGPT has a Mac app. Claude has one too. Gemini has a website. For a product Google is leaning on heavily, that’s a conspicuous absence—especially when a native app means faster access, easier file uploads, and tighter workflow integration than any browser can offer.No launch date has been announced, but outside testing is usually the last stop before a public release.
