Why the fee raised concern
Hospitals in the US routinely hire foreign-trained doctors and nurses, particularly ahead of July 1, when new medical residents join. The role of foreign medical graduates becomes more visible in regions with limited access to healthcare. These areas often rely on international professionals to maintain basic medical services.“I live in Flint, Michigan, a very medically underserved place that really depends on international medical graduates,” Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, president of the American Medical Association (AMA), told the New York Times. “If this doesn’t get fixed, it leaves places like my hometown and other rural communities without enough physicians to take care of that population.”“In many such communities, international medical graduates play a vital role in providing care and ensuring patients can see a doctor when they need one,” he added, according to NYT.The American Medical Association has urged Congress to act quickly on the bill.
Broader workforce pressures
The issue extends beyond immediate hiring costs. The US is already facing a projected shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036, according to the American Medical Association.Nursing shortages also remain a concern. As of 2022, around 500,000 immigrant nurses were working in the country, making up roughly one in six registered nurses. High visa costs risk adding further strain to an already stretched healthcare system.
