Canada is also known as the “Land of Lilies.” This is not only in the context of the wildflowers that grow in the meadows. There is, in fact, a very significant connection to history, symbols, and heritage.The connection of Canada with lilies traces its origins back to the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of a stylised figure of a lily that appears on flags and coats of arms that represented the period of French rule in Canada for a very long time. The design of the single bloom represented quite a lot in history, including the province of Quebec in Canada, which is predominantly French-speaking.Today, the idea of Canada as the Land of Lilies equally speaks to natural beauty and the cultural influence that moulded the country’s early identity. The Land of Lilies title also reflects the way Canadians embrace a mix of traditions across their vast landscapes.
What does ‘land of lilies’ really mean
The name “Land of Lilies” does not indicate that Canada is populated by lily flowers alone. Rather, it suggests the significant association that lilies are seen to bear to Canada and its identity. The name mostly originated from the fleur-de-lis, which is a lily symbol predominantly associated with French history, standing for nobility and historical significance. Canada’s association with French rule in some parts of its land ensured that the fleur-de-lis, the lily, was embedded profoundly in the Canadian identity, particularly in regions with French influence.
How the Fleur-de-Lis ties Canada to monarchy and history
The fleur-de-lis is directly associated with Canada and its history as a colony. In fact, during this period of historical significance, the fleur-de-lis was placed on flags, coats of arms, and other signs of authority to denote the reign of French kings over Canada. When Canada was colonised by France, it is no wonder that the fleur-de-lis was also present as a result. It even persisted during the British reign over Canada. Currently, it is a reminder of Canada’s historical journey.
Canada’s natural Lilies: The Western Red Lily
However, in addition to the symbols and flags, lilies are found in their natural state in Canada as well, thereby further emphasising the link between Canada and lilies. One of the most common species of lilies which are found in Canada is the Western Red Lily, which blooms as a bright and hardy wild flower in open grasslands and meadows. This particular species of lily holds a significant place in the province of Saskatchewan, which has assigned it the position of the provincial flower because of its hardiness in adverse climates, symbolising the ‘Land of Lilies’ in a tangible manner.
