He has been booked under Sections 105, 106(1) and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for alleged culpable homicide due to negligence. Police said the arrest was made in connection with alleged negligence at a construction site linked to the incident. He will be produced before a court as per procedure.Acting on the directions of the police commissioner, Gautam Buddh Nagar, and under the supervision of senior police officials, a special team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida First, successfully apprehended the accused. Police said further verification of the criminal history of the accused is underway. The case relates to the incident on the night of January 17, when Mehta’s SUV plunged into a water-filled pit nearly 30 feet deep at a commercial site in Sector 150 amid dense fog and poor visibility. The pit allegedly lacked barricades, reflectors and warning signage. The post-mortem report revealed that Mehta died due to asphyxiation and cardiac failure. He is believed to have remained trapped in the water for nearly 90 minutes, during which he climbed onto his sinking vehicle, flashed his mobile phone’s torch and called for help.An FIR had earlier been registered against builders linked to the site for serious safety lapses. The incident has also led to major administrative action. The Uttar Pradesh government removed the Noida Authority CEO and set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the death.Residents of Sector 150 protested at the site, alleging repeated warnings about the hazardous stretch were ignored. Authorities have since suspended a junior engineer, issued notices to other officials, and ordered inspections of construction-site safety across the area.Police said further investigation is underway and more action may follow based on the SIT’s findings.
