'Five Films For Freedom' returns; Celebrate Stories of Identity, Courage and Belonging Worldwide
The British Film Institute Flare and British Council are bringing back ‘Five Films For Freedom’. This annual online short film program will showcase global LGBTQIA+ stories. Audiences worldwide can stream these films for free from March 18 to March 29. The initiative aims to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices and foster understanding through cinema.

British Film Institute Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, in partnership with the British Council, announced the return of “Five Films For Freedom”, the annual online short film programme, which will run between March 18 and 29.The programme will feature the films of the filmmakers from the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam and France and will be available to audiences worldwide to stream online for free via the British Council’s digital platforms, and on BFI Player in the UK, according to a press release.This year’s programme presents a bold selection of global LGBTQIA+ stories that span intimacy, identity, resilience and belonging across generations and geographies. The first “Five Films For Freedom” was launched in 2015.Alison Barrett, country director India, British Council, said, film remains “one of the most powerful ways culture shapes attitudes, empathy and belonging, particularly for younger generations.” “‘Five Films For Freedom’ uses the universal language of cinema to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices, spark conversation and build understanding. These stories remind us that no matter where, or who, we are, the need for love and self-expression is universal,” she added.Rafiul Alom Rahman, Director of The Queer Muslim Project, added, “We are delighted to collaborate with the British Council to present FiveFilmsForFreedom, a powerful platform for showcasing diverse LGBTQIA+ stories from around the world while sparking conversations on inclusion.Kristy Matheson, Director of BFI Festivals, said, “These stories move across borders instantly. They show everyday courage, tenderness and identity, and when they’re seen globally they create connection in places where representation still really matters. The five films will be available to stream for free worldwide via the British Council’s digital platforms and on the BFI Player in the UK.”
