US offers travel guidance for citizens in Middle East, shares emergency contacts and possible departure options

The US Department of State has issued updated guidance for Americans currently in the Middle East, urging them to stay in contact with US embassies and register for alerts as authorities monitor the evolving regional situation. In its update issued on March 9, 2026, at 9 PM Eastern Time, the department urged the American citizens in the Middle East region to follow the latest instructions from the nearest US Embassy or Consulate and contact them if they need assistance returning home safely.

Register for security alerts

The State Department asked Americans in the region to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and emergency notifications from US embassies. By registering through the STEP platform, travellers can receive email alerts about changing security conditions and travel guidance in the country where they are staying. The State Department said its 24-hour task force is available to provide consular information and assistance. Departure assistance

US citizens attempting to leave several Middle Eastern countries may also submit a form to request updates about potential government-facilitated departures. According to the State Department, Americans seeking information on departure options from Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates can fill out an online form. The department said those who submit the form may be contacted with information if US government-facilitated departure options become available. Officials emphasised that travellers should continue to monitor official guidance from US embassies and consulates while considering travel plans.
