Chennai Tambaram corpn issues eviction notices to 300 shops on GST Road

Chennai: Scores of encroachments, including pushcart eateries, bunk shops and small businesses, have taken over pavements along GST Road, particularly the Tambaram Sanatorium stretch. They return despite periodic eviction drives held by Tambaram Corporation, making it difficult for pedestrians to use the pavements. In an effort to find a permanent solution, the corporation has now announced a major drive to clear encroachments and beautify the pedestrian pathways along the 12-km GST Road stretch under its limits. Corporation officials said notices were issued to around 300 shops and commercial establishments, asking them to vacate the pavements. After removing the encroachments, the footpaths will be rebuilt using paver blocks to create a safe and comfortable walking space, said officials. Officials said the proposed 96-lakh upgraded pavements will also have improved street lighting, and CCTV cameras will be installed to enhance monitoring and public safety. However, V Saritha, secretary of Ganesh Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, said the beautification works carried out earlier in Chromepet and Pallavaram have left the place messier than before. “The plants are overgrown, and not properly maintained. The stretch has become an eyesore,” she said.Saritha added that the corporation must clearly demarcate vending and non-vending zones to control hawkers. “On most pavements in the area, bunk shops and bike mechanics occupy large portions, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road,” she said.K Arun Srinivasan, an advocate and resident of Chromepet, said areas such as Radha Nagar had more than 100 fast food stalls operating on pavements. “Food is prepared in unhygienic conditions, yet large crowds gather between 6pm and 9pm. Despite complaints to traffic police, no action has been taken. The food safety department must inspect these stalls and take action,” he said.
