The practice follows the example of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. While the Sunnah is to observe i’tikaf for ten days, it is permissible for at least one day and one night. As the last ten nights approach, the registration window now allows worshippers to prepare for this period of reflection at Islam’s two holiest sites.
