IIT Madras welcomes cross-campus study programme: How students can take courses at other IITs and earn credits
IIT cross-campus initiative 2026: students can take courses and transfer credits

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are set to introduce a cross-campus academic mobility programme that will allow students to enrol in select courses at other IIT campuses and have those credits transferred back to their home institute. The move marks the first formal academic exchange of its kind within the IIT system.According to a report by The Times of India (TNN), the initiative will begin from the 2026-27 academic session. Under the programme, students can not only take individual courses at partner campuses but also spend an entire term away from their parent institute while earning credits that count toward their degree. The decision is intended to provide more flexibility in academic pathways beyond the rigid rank-bound system determined by JEE ranks.Groundwork and curriculum mappingResponding to the TNN report, IIT Madras issued an official reaction on X (@iitmadras), describing the development as a significant step towards a more interconnected academic experience. Highlighting preparations behind the effort, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said on X: “We are mapping curricula across multiple programmes in various IITs.” He added, “Once that is matched, our students from IIT Madras can spend a term in another IIT, or another student from IIT Kanpur or Delhi or Indore can come to the Madras campus to study some courses and earn credits, which we will transfer to the home institute.”The institution’s reaction emphasised that academic deans from participating IITs are collaborating to ensure that course equivalencies and approvals are aligned before wide implementation. What students can expect from the new programmeUnder the initiative, students will be able to broaden their academic exposure by accessing specialised courses that may not be available at their home campus. The cross-campus option also aims to encourage interdisciplinary learning and peer interaction across the IIT network.A statement on X from IIT Madras captured the spirit of the programme, reading: “One rank. Many campuses. Limitless learning.” The post noted that the initiative “promises greater choice, mobility, and interdisciplinary learning for students across India’s premier tech institutions.”While universities around the world have long facilitated academic exchange through joint degrees and shared classrooms, India’s IITs have largely observed this trend from the sidelines. This new programme represents an effort to align India’s top technical institutions with global practices in academic collaboration.Limited rollout with student benefitsThe implementation will begin in a controlled manner, with careful mapping of curricula to ensure that credits earned off-campus contribute fully to degree requirements. Students and faculty have described the development as a positive move that could open doors to diverse subject areas, new learning environments and peer networks across different IIT campuses. As approvals proceed and course mapping completes, students can look forward to a flexible and enriched academic experience while remaining within the IIT system.
