The US Department of Education has initiated the first stage of developing the 2027–28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, according to an official press release issued on February 13, 2026.The Department has published an information collection notice, marking the beginning of the formal development process. As per the release, this move will ensure that the 2027–28 FAFSA form is launched by October 1, 2026.The FAFSA form is a critical document that enables students across the United States to apply for federal financial assistance for higher education.Administration Highlights “Historic Progress”The press release stated that the Trump Administration has prioritised accessibility and technical expertise to streamline the financial aid process.“After years of mismanagement under the Biden Administration that left students and families struggling with delays and confusion, the Trump Administration promised to fix the FAFSA form — and in just one year, we have delivered historic progress for students and families across the country,” said Nicholas Kent, Under Secretary of Education, as quoted in the release.He further added, “We welcome public comment and feedback as we continue to modernize and streamline the form to better serve American students, families, and institutions.”Key Improvements for Students and FamiliesAccording to the Department, several new features were introduced in the 2026–27 FAFSA cycle. These include a redesigned contributor invite process, which allows students to invite parents to complete their portion of the form using a simple code.The Department also introduced instant verification for new StudentAid.gov accounts to reduce delays. An earnings indicator feature now allows applicants to check whether graduates from specific institutions earn less than a high-school graduate.In a significant claim, the Department said it reversed previous negligence to curb FAFSA-related fraud, saving federal taxpayers over $1 billion last year.Additionally, changes under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act exclude certain family-owned businesses, farms, and fishing operations from asset calculations, better reflecting students’ financial needs.What’s New for 2027–28 ApplicantsFor the upcoming cycle, the Department plans to make renewal easier by pre-populating student data from previous forms. Questions have been rewritten in clearer language to remove confusing jargon.The form will also be more family-friendly. Parents with multiple children applying for aid can reuse information instead of entering it repeatedly.The Department has invited public comments through the Federal eRulemaking Portal and clarified that submissions must be made by April 14.For millions of students planning their higher education journey, the timely rollout of FAFSA remains a crucial step towards securing financial support.
