Takaichi’s Castle

Japan’s first female PM set for landslide poll win. This is good news for India and Quad

She can play the drums, sleep only two hours a day, and is very popular with young people in Japan. Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first woman Prime Minister, looks like she has won the election by a huge amount. News channel NHK says her party is expected to win far more than half the seats in Japan’s main law-making group. With help from another party, she may have enough power to easily pass new laws and make big changes.

Many people like Takaichi because she talks strongly about keeping Japan safe, controlling immigration, and spending more money to help the country. Her ideas have won support from people across different political groups. Even though Japanese politics has usually been led by men, she has very high approval ratings—over 70%. She also gets along well with former U.S. President Donald Trump, and both think Japan should spend more on defense.

For India, Takaichi could be a good partner. She has spoken firmly about standing up to China and supporting Taiwan if it is attacked. She also supports the “Quad,” a group that includes India, Japan, the U.S., and Australia, which works together to keep the region safe. With her strong win, she may be able to bring leaders together for a big meeting. Fun fact: scientists say that long ago, about half of Japan’s samurai were women—just like Takaichi breaking barriers today.
