‘Keeping Indian wife happy’: Row over Republican congressman saying Texans go to malls and ‘feel like they’re in Pakistan’

A Republican congressman stirred a row after warning that Texans should not visit shopping centres and feel like they are in Pakistan, with social media saying the comments were made in order to appease his wife, who is of Indian origin.Brandon Gill is a Texas conservative leader who made the comments in a recent episode of Bannon’s Warroom. Speaking about immigration and Islam, Gill said: “I hear from constituents all the time who are deeply and desperately concerned about the Islamization of the Dallas area. They’re hearing about mosques that are popping up near land that they or their family have owned for generations. They’re hearing about these epic city compounds that are popping up, where you have entire communities who are being transformed.”He also added that: “When you hear about constituents talking about going to their local malls and you look around and it feels like you’re in Pakistan, not Dallas, Texas. That’s a problem. And you’re seeing our our communities, our culture, the place that that we know and love here being fundamentally transformed. And my constituents and are concerned and I’m concerned.”Gill later shared the same video on X and posted: “Texans shouldn’t go to the mall and feel like they’re in Pakistan. Mass Islamic migration is killing the America we know and love.”Gill is married to Danielle D’Souza Gill, the daughter of Indian-American commentator and MAGA ally Dinesh D’Souza. Social media users criticised Brandon, with one reaction reading: “Name checking Pakistan specifically to keep the Indian wife happy”.D’Souza, Gill’s father-in-law, was born in Mumbai and moved to the US as an exchange student before graduating from Dartmouth College. Gill has previously argued that Islam is foreign to US history. In another X post, he said, “Islam didn’t come to the United States on the Mayflower. We imported it relatively recently via a suicidal immigration system.” He added that importing “radical Islam” would “destroy America just like it’s destroying Europe right now.”Gill has also aligned himself with hardline positions, saying: “It’s our job to stand up to that, to stand up for our values and to prohibit alien cultures and alien ideologies that do not comport with our own government governing framework. And that’s why I’m proud to be part of the Sharia Free America Caucus.”
