Offering water to the sacred Tulsi plant, also known as Holy Basil, is an age-old daily ritual in most traditional Hindu households. It is believed that chanting specific mantras while offering water can boost its potency by aligning the vibrations with divine energies and attracting blessings from Goddess Lakshmi.Why this ritual?In ancient texts, the holy Tulsi is revered as Vrinda Devi, which embodies purity and protection. Pouring water on the roots every morning after bathing and wearing clean clothes, which is believed to cleanse negative energies and foster harmony. Om Subhadrayai Namahॐ सुभद्रायै नमःIt is believed to be a bija mantra that honors Tulsi as Goddess Subhadra, the auspicious embodiment of divine grace. It is believed that this mantra works by invoking Lakshmi’s blessings, dissolving financial obstacles by ushering abundance. The vibration of “Subhadrayai” removes financial energies (daridra dosha) by elevating sattvic qualities and creates a protective aura, ensuring household prosperity as per texts like the Tulsi Stotra.Om Vrindayai Namahॐ वृन्दायै नमःThis mantra is dedicated to Vrinda Devi, who is holy Tulsi’s eternal form. This mantra is chanted during pradakshina (circumambulation) while offering water. It is believed the chanting this mantra while pouring water helps in harmonizing the five elements, helps in purifying the soul from sins, and strengthening devotion to Vishnu. Mahaprasada Janani Sarva Saubhagyavardhiniमहाप्रसाद जननी सर्व सौभाग्यवर्धिनी।आधि व्याधि हर नित्यं तुलसी त्वं नमोऽस्तु ते॥Recite this shloka from Tulsi Stotram 3 times, visualizing light emanating from Tulsi as you offer water. This verse praises Tulsi as the mother of divine grace, remover of physical/mental afflictions. It functions through rhythmic chanting that balances doshas, cures diseases (vyadhi har), boosts fortune (saubhagyavardhini), and invites Vishnu-Lakshmi’s presence, creating perpetual peace and spiritual elevation.
